Dr. Hughes has over 23 years of academic and professional experience within machine learning and digital signal processing specific to ECG analysis. The subject of his PhD (Oxford, 2005) was the key challenge posed by SafeBeat’s algorithm – correctly annotating the end of ECG T-waves and the QT interval. His subsequent postdoctoral work (Stanford, Oxford) was on computational and experimental approaches to address key challenges in predicting, monitoring and understanding patient response to various cancer therapies. He was the Principal Data Scientist at AliveCor, and the ML Team Lead at iRhythm, who make the ECG hardware that SafeBeat is using and has previously used respectively. For over 6 years, his commercial work has focused on the industrial applications of ML, and consulting on the crossover of biosignal and ML techniques
